As we gather for worship week after week, it is important to point out that we do so in public. Our worship is public, and this is because the gospel of Jesus Christ is public. The murder of Jesus occurred in public, and His resurrection was seen and testified in public. The gospel did not occur in private, and so we proclaim the gospel in public. When Jesus rose from the dead, He was not merely performing a super miracle; He was proven to be who He said He was. He was proven to be God in the flesh, the Messiah of Israel, the rightful King of all the earth. Therefore, as Christians, we are called to love all men because all human life bears the image of its Maker and King; all human life has inherent value from Him and obligations to Him. On that basis, we do not hesitate to tell the world the truth about their Maker, the truth about sin, and the truth about the Savior and King of the World, our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, when the Lincoln, Nebraska public schools instruct their teachers to avoid recognition of boys and girls in favor of gender blending titles like “purple penguins” we laugh at their arrogance and proclaim in the name of Jesus that this is like calling squares round and that Jesus is the Savior from this kind of insanity. When Mayor Annise Parker and her cronies on the Houston city council decide that men can use women’s restrooms if they’re feeling a bit feminine on the inside, we smile and preach Jesus, the Lamb of God who takes away every sexual sin, who heals every sexual confusion. While the enemies of our God are growing in their boldness and these things represent an enormous failure on the part of the Church in America, it is also a moment for great rejoicing because now we know what we’re aiming at. Now the rebellion is too big to miss. But do not forget how small these little men and women actually are: Our God is enthroned in heaven forever, and He squints down at the counsels of foolish men that raise their little fists at Him, like tiny ants quivering their defiant antennae at heaven.
Our Jesus purchased this world with His precious blood two thousand years ago, and therefore all of it already belongs to Him. Our Jesus owns Lincoln, Nebraska, Houston, Texas, Moscow, Idaho, Tokyo, Japan, Paris France, and every square inch in between. And we hope they print this good news in the papers because it’s public, it’s for the whole world, and that’s what we’re celebrating right now.
