“Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves. We are His sheep, and the sheep of His pasture” (Ps. 100:3).
This is one of the most fundamental realities in the world. If there is a God who made us, then we are His. We belong to Him, and it is nothing but gladness to serve Him. But if there is no God, then we essentially made ourselves and therefore we belong to ourselves. If God has not made us, we are not His, and we may do whatever we please.
This is why the doctrine of creation matters so much. And this is why evolution is one of the sacred cows of our culture. If we admit that we are made then the Maker determines meaning and truth. But if there is no god, meaning and truth are flexible, malleable. The hope is that if people don’t think they have arrived at some absolute, transcendent truth – the hope is that they won’t become radical and violent. People who think they have found the truth often become extremists, we are told. But the trouble is that truth is a stubborn thing, and people have this stubborn desire to live a meaningful life.
The false gospel of modern social liberalism is that if nothing means very much then we can all get along and be happy and free. If no one thinks they are absolutely right, people will respect one another more. But this (at best) sacrifices a meaningful existence to a peaceful existence, and it’s very much doubtful that nihilism (meaninglessness) will actually give us peace. When people have nothing to live for, they do not tend to be helpful contributors to society.
The Christian gospel announces the good news that there is a God who made us, and He has come for us. Not only did He make us, but we are His. And because we belong to Him, we have value, we have meaning, we have purpose. If your meaning and value is up to you, you will quickly become stressed, depressed, and angry. But it is good news to know that the Lord, He is God; it is He who has made us and not we ourselves.
