When Sennacherib has taunted the people of God in Jerusalem and proclaimed that their doom is sure, God gives Hezekiah a sign of their safety and deliverance. That sign is a continuing harvest. God says that they will eat the harvest this year and next year and the third year. God tells them to plant their vineyards, and eat the fruit. The food means they will be safe.
God prepares this table for you in the presence of your enemies. And this table is God’s sign and promise to you that no weapon formed against you shall prosper. Here you are assured that you are safe beneath the shadow of His wings.
Whatever evil army of sin or doubt or pain or fear is currently laying siege to your heart or mind this morning, God points you to this table. He says to you, that enemy cannot have you. Those weapons cannot harm. He will defend you from every evil.
So cast down your sin. Cast down your fear, your doubt. Is Jesus risen from the dead? Is Jesus ascended to the right hand of the Father? Is He King of all Kings and Lord of all Lords? Then you are safe, and this meal is His oath to you, that you belong to Him. And the Angel of the Lord defends you on every side.
So come, eat, drink, and rejoice. Your God fights for you.
Matthew N. Petersen says
I realized this post may be able to show some of my difficulties. Can you say that this food means you’re safe? Or do you have to say “if you are safe, this food means you’re safe. But if you’re not safe, this food means you are going to be kiled”? And if the second, how is it good news, and what can you possible say to someone who is doubting if it actually means they’re safe? “Hope God saves you”?
