We are gathered here this morning because God has called us into His presence. The Bible tells that God’s presence is many different things. It is terrifying in some ways. When people come into the presence of God, they often fall down, they cover their mouths, they cover their eyes. They cry out, “Holy! Holy! Holy!” But one of the most striking things about meeting God in Jesus is the realization that this is overwhelming glory, this consuming fire is not what you first thought it was. God is eternally against sin. He does hate what evil does to this world. But God is not like us. He is not so small as to be bound by the evil and brokenness of this world. God is not caught off guard. He is not startled. He doesn’t have bad days. What we find when we know God in Jesus is that this glory, this holiness, this presence is not overwhelming because of the anger, because of the judgment, because God is on the verge of blowing up – Ps. 16 says “My heart is glad, and my glory rejoices, you will show me the path of life; in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” For those who flee to Christ, for those who humble themselves before the God of all the earth, you find when you are summonsed into His presence that the only reason it’s so hard to stand up is because the joy is so overwhelming. And so be assured that if you are seeking blessing, there is more blessing here than you can handle. This is the eternal blessing, the eternal joy of the Father, Son, and Spirit. So open your open mouth wide, and God will fill it.
