Morning Prayer Exhortation Gen. 8/Heb 4
Man was created to be a priest, to take the gifts of God and to offer them up with thanksgiving and joy. The world was to be our altar, and every gift was meant to lift us up to His presence.
But we grasped for gifts that had not been given, and our hearts grew dark and cold. And when evil covered the earth, Noah experienced the greatest storm in human history, spending over a year floating in a giant coffin on the sea.
Noah came out of the ark with his family and all of the animals and immediately built an altar and worshiped the Lord. The world died and was born again. Then the Lord smelled the soothing aroma and promised that He would never again destroy every living thing.
When we say that Jesus is our Great High Priest, we mean that He is our new Adam, and He has made all things new. He has passed back into God’s presence. He has offered up the gifts of God in thanksgiving and the sacrifices for sin that were required.
We need grace because of our sins and because there is still death in our bodies. We need grace because we are afraid of obeying, afraid of letting go of our idols. But we do not have a high priest who does not sympathize with us in our weakness. For He has been tempted just as we are and is yet without sin. So let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
