Efficacious Appetizers

This meal is picture of what God is doing with this whole world. God is gathering all things together in Christ, all things in heaven and on earth. And He’s doing this through the death and resurrection of Jesus. And this meal is part of God’s promise to us that this is the case. Do you see the broken bread, do you see how God broke His own Son on the cross for our sins? Do you see the wine poured out? Do you see how Jesus shed His blood for you to make you clean? But taste it. Is it bitter? Is it sour? No, it’s sweet. It’s good. And God says that He is doing the same thing in all of us and with this entire world. He’s taking the broken things and turning them into good things. He’s taking the bitter things and turning them into sweet things. He’s taking the divided things and bringing them together in unity. And He’s doing it through His gifts, through overflowing with joy and pleasure. He’s doing it by inviting you to His table week after week, to remind you that His delight is in you. So take and eat, take and drink, God rejoices over you. God rejoices in you. And this is just the appetizer. God has been planning a party for you and for this world since before the world began. It’s going to be that good.
